Ethnic wear has always been available in abundance in Kolkata evidently with shoppers pouring in from all over the world to buy the painstakingly crafted pieces of art from designers born and going strong here. Till two decades back, there were one or few designers and labels to shop from; then in the next decade dozens of designers came from fashion schools to start their own trends. And now every lane houses a design genius who’s visionary makes us all look different from each other. To bring out these new names not only locally, but from all over the country, four gorgeous fashion enthusiasts ideated ‘Fireflies’ – a lifestyle exhibition celebrating it’s 6th edition, with online partner BlabberCat, on 28th March 2016, Taj Bengal, Kolkata, 11 Am – 8 PM.
Priti Agarwal – Creative, Saloni Bhalotia – Administrative, Shilpi Goel – Media and Marketing, Sneha Taori Tapdiya – Curation
Celebrating it’s 6th edition, Fireflies is back, this time coated and dusted with ‘Bling’ – the theme for this edition. Less than a week to Kolkata’s most sellable fashion exhibition, BlabberCat rewinds to feed the curious cat with how the journey began. In 2010, friends Saloni and Preeti wished for a pop up that could bring together affordable designers from across the country. Hence they organised one and named it ‘Fireflies’. And where did the name derive from? No prizes for guessing, the song ‘Fireflies’ playing in the car on repeat mode, a favourite for the ladies to sing along.
“The concept of this lifestyle exhibition is to bring out newly launched labels or labels that have never come to Kolkata before. It’s primarily to bring shoppers and designers under one roof and make the city’s shopping experience different from last year every time. The conceptualisation, decor, set up and everything else is focused around a theme. But all this is just to add to the shopping experience and create a celebratory atmosphere,” said Preeti and Saloni, co-founders at FireFlies.
Every industry goes through ups and downs, but people don’t stop shopping, whether its wedding season or not, shopping and preparations go on throughout the year and when all that you need comes under one roof – at affordable prices along with variety offered new names it is then we call it ‘Fireflies’. “Out of 68 designers, 50 are new, the products sell like hot-cakes unlike most lifestyle exhibitions where window shopping is a frequent issue. Buying lehengas, sarees and jewellery worth lakhs from an exhibition makes many shoppers uncomfortable and this is the reason why we mix the line up for everyone to be able to buy something for their special occasion,” added Shilpi and Sneha, co-founders at Fireflies.
“I have a long and old bond with Fireflies. My shopping and trend tip this year is; when a dress works effortlessly from desk to dinner and everything in between, you know it’s a keeper,” said Preeti Jhawar, known for showcasing versatility and individuality in her Spring and Summer range.
Fireflies is always dazzled with the city’s glitterati including Tollywood celebrities such as Rituparna Sengupta, Gargi Roy Chowdhury, Rachna Banerjee, Mohua Chatterjee, Ushoshi Sengupta to name a few. Respected citizens such as Kishore and Rita Bhimani. Hena Nafiz and Agnimitra Paul are also regular shoppers. “We can’t wait for 2016’s Bling edition of ‘Fireflies’ because it’s bigger, more exciting and a shopping spree no-one will ever forget,” chorused the fashion entrepreneurs.
