The streets of Kuala Lampur, Jakarta, Bangkok and Singapore are always thriving on lights, appetising food and a rush of enthusiastic crowd. Pings Cafe in Kolkata has a similar scenario. Latticed window, street lamppost, recycled candy containers, plastic crates used for alcohol display all come together and paint the perfect Asian street picture. But the food should not be mistaken for cafe category. The dinning is more than just fine and bao!
Before the official food tasting, I had already tried the food, five times since the opening and taking the owners permission I even spoke to some of the guests about what they’re ordering and liking the most. The most ordered item is the Philadelphia Cream Cheese Dumpling - a dollop of Philadelphia cream cheese bursting out in just the right amount and the fried Calamari (in the pic below). The most recommended dishes according to popular demand and us are the Wok Tossed dynamite shrimp, bite size corn fritters, Pakchoi Bamboo Shoots and water chestnuts and Khao Suey among many others. In the pic above are the famous baos that my fellow bloggers agreed are the best baos we've tasted so far in the city. The baos are soft, the glazing of the meat is just about right and the spice is controlled.
The Dimsum menu was a pleasant surprise as they incorporated every flavour and combination that a dimsum lover could dream off. We've already mentioned the famous Philadelphia Cream Cheese but besides that do order the Steamed spicy Wild Mushroom if you're a vegetarian and scallop if you eat sea food.
The most ordered cocktail is Ping Fashioned - A twist on the Old Fashioned, but instead of a Sugar Cube, we have put in a sweet homemade ginger & star anise syrup. And the most recommended cocktail by us is Hot Toddy - Brandy, Home-made spiced honey syrup, lime bitters and spices (in the above pic). Pings cocktails are especially known for their no hangover guarantee. The premium alchohol used and the combination is what makes all the difference.
The dessert that celebrates the meal is Hot chocolate foam (in the pic above). Its light and true to its name - faomy. It's comforting and feels like a hug during this season and dig right in to get the tinge of Rum. Next up on Pings is the new Christmas special menu for food and cocktails so watch out!
