Inbox (57), Instagram DM (31), Snapchat (20) – just helpless queries on how to become a fashionista. The primary reason that drove me to write this article was how impressive it was that they just didn’t want to look pretty; they wanted to enrich and practice their fashion knowledge. Gone are the days when a girl would put together leggings and a long top for a movie and dinner. They all have stars raining from their eyes with so many fashion blogs floating our news feed and magazine covers just keep getting quirkier – Astha Modi
s and Magazines
You remember when your parents would tell you to read the newspaper when you were younger? It was to keep you updated about the world affairs and improve your command over the language. Fashion is a world in itself and it’s not easy to cope with all the new trends and news related to the million fashion houses that create pieces of art to embrace your body and personality.
s such as Man Repeller and Stellar’s Wardrobe to magazines such as Vogue and GQ should be as familiar to you as your favourite song’s lyrics.
‘Self creativity is required every time you dress up. I personally feel that your look should not be scattered. Try to spot the area that needs a little tweak to outshine your look. A plain effortless garment could do with a dramatic lip colour or just a pair of old pants can be given a new story with a pair of funky shoes,” – Shaurya, stylist and fashion blogger, New Delhi.
2. No Bollywood films
Bollywood is no longer an inspiration for fashion like it used to be two decades ago. Yash Raj films made chiffon sarees the ultimate garment of sexiness and of course a must-have from Tiffany’s all because of Audrey Hepburn. But now films inspire from designers. Sets and costumes are done the top fashion name in the industry and when it’s not we see Kajol wearing wearing all the country’s national flags all at once like in Gerua. But when done correctly, every bride wants to look like Deepika from Bajirao or Ram Leela.
3. Don’t follow the trend
What’s trending is not necessarily always right. And even if it is it doesn’t mean it will magically make anyone look good. Please try to read between the lines and understand the bigger picture. Following the herd is never advisable but yes, getting the herd to follow you is always flattering.
“Never ever let the crowd influence your dressing. Why blend in when you can stand out? And never dress for someone else,” said Drishleen Sethi, freelance stylist and fashion head at Advitya.
4. Avoid brand blindness
Please explain how a a bag with the same common monogram printed all over, costing lakhs is making you look pretty? Style does not come automatically with a steaming price tag, it actually comes with an effortless chic taste drizzled with confidence and oomph that only comes from within.
5. My body is my temple
at shaming is very sad and every body is beautiful but being unhealthy is not. A lot of women are raising their hands and announcing I am like this only and I love it, which is awesome but it should not be because you’re too lazy to sweat it out. When someone says eating green vegetables is important, it’s because it will provide you with the nutrients your body requires and not because that person thinks you look ugly. Please treat your body right, filter what you consume and work out to keep fit. Once your healthy, you’re happy and when you’re healthy and happy, you’ll look fab,
6. Subtle and striking
Neckpiece, AND earrings, AND ring, no sorry ringS, and body harness, hand harness, mathapatti added with a big bag, floral top, vibrant skirt, big glittery shoes, oh you forgot new accessories such as collar pins, ankle chains AND head gears. Done! You are now ready for a quick cup of coffee with the girl gang. Don’t be surprised if you’re reported missing soon because the Amazon forests are looking to preserve exotic endangered birds.
“Wear just one statement piece. Your look should be memorable for all the right reasons . It could be a pair of drool-worthy shoes or vintage sunglasses or just torn jeans worn the right way. Create your entire look around that ‘it piece and see the eyes lingering around, don’t forget to look out for jaws dropping in silence,” said Chikky Goenka, stylist and fashion blogger, Kolkata.
7. Investment pieces
Being blinded brands is not required but one can’t go wrong with basic tailoring, especially with garments or products you use everyday. You rather save up and buy 1 pair of nice fitting black pants, gold coloured heels and a plain white tee that fits like it was made for you. No loose ends, feel good fabric, not too tight on the chest and buttocks and nothing less than perfect. Spend time and money looking for these essentials.
8. Get to know your wardrobe
“Oh I didn’t even remember I had this! Fuck I wish I had found this before my date night last weekend.” How many times has this happened to you. Or if you are buying a skirt but can’t think of any top in your closet that might go with it. But actually there are more than three plain tee and formals shirts or even capes in your possession that might look great with the skirt but you can’t recall. Why does it take 2 hours to decide what to wear? The answer is simple – you must know what you have on your finger tips. Oh I just got invited to this Sunday’s brunch, I already know I want to wear the mint green maxi with the white shoes I bought online. But if I want to save that outfit for my mom’s birthday then I can just wear the tie-and-dye dress and net cape.
9. Don’t ever copy someone
However flattering it is, it’s equally obnoxious. There’s always one friend in every entourage that ends up wearing the same outfit you took an hour to put together just two days after you wore it. It’s even worse when someone gets the same hairstyle as you. Stalker much?
“Hair is the first thing someone notices about you so manipulating bad hair days is essential. Always wear your hair in style instead of plain Jane look. Few highlights or a global hair colour is a hassle free way to get a makeover,” said Megha Sarin, Mumbai, fashion and lifestyle blogger.
10. Repeat it and be proud of it
A new outfit every time is ridiculous and starry-eyed. Even celebrities repeat their outfits nowadays. Wear the LBD with completely new accessories, hair, capes and jackets every time.
11. Find love in a hopeless place
An extra effort is required to keep browsing online because you might just find something fun when you least expect it. Life is like that only and we need to cope with all the ‘New in’ and ‘On Sale’ tabs for every e-portal we trust.
“Lipsticks add life to any outfit. Even on the drab days just a pop of lip colour can give you the edge. Don’t stick to your favourite brand because you never know where you’ll find a beautiful shade and even similar shades differ so pucker up stylistas,” said Rati Agrawal, Mumbai, fashion journalist for TOI and blogger.
