The return of ‘Restaurant Week India’

The return of ‘Restaurant Week India’

Imagine a special menu curated at only Rs 900 per head at a restaurant you would usually go to celebrate special occasions. This enthralling initiative Restaurant Week India is the best gift one could give to a foodie. Especially, when the festive season has already hit Kolkata where people are in the mood to indulge and save up at the same time. A bi-annual culinary celebration across major cities, Restaurant Week India is always much-awaited especially because of Yauatcha. BlabberCat’s association with Yauatcha Kolkata started last year in the same way and since then our exquisite food affair began.

Appetisers

Truffle and English Carrot Dumpling

A substitute for the famous Edamame truffle dumpling. We read ‘truffle’ and ordered it. The beauty of carrot lies in the colour and sweetness which when paired with the aroma of truffle, results in a perfect heady bundle of flavours topped with chive juices.

Chicken and Coriander Dumpling

A shade of fuchsia dumpling coating the soft chicken well mixed with coriander was easy on the palate. The red tinge of the dumpling comes from red cabbage.

Sesame Prawn Toast

A little toastie with minced prawn and a thin lining of sesame was downright the perfect appetiser and a party starter.

Main Course

Wok Fried Vegetarian Chicken in Spicy Sauce with Toban Chilli Fried Rice

A popular RWI signature dish. Now what exactly is a vegetarian chicken, you must be wondering. It’s nothing but a soya chunk and it’s really tasty. It’s got a distinctive taste, slightly chewy and great for Asian cuisines.

Awadhi Cuisine, greatly influenced the Mughal cooking techniques, is the gift given to the world the Bawarchis of Lucknow and it’s surrounding areas. #KolkataFoodJourney 2015

As I neared the meeting spot, I noticed a bunch of curious foodies, with no fixed pattern or narrow group type, scattered but yet gathered to embark on a memorable food journey. And as we had expected, there was no formal introduction required because mostly everyone recognised each other from social media or word of mouth. A home baker, whose Instagram food photography beats any restaurant in Kolkata, IIHM Young Chef India winners Garima Poddar and Simran Kapur, Kolkata Foodie girls Priyanka Gupta and Ritika Jaiswal, anonymous reporter who couldn’t disclose his portal for company’s policies were among the few who had come with big appetites and open minds. #KolkataFoodJourney presented Entrée to Dessert and The India Diaries was in association with Uber Cabs and dessert partner was Mrs Magpie, Chocolate Partner was Chocotarian, online media partner was BlabberCat. For the first time ever in Kolkata, a journey of food of this calibre was organised which created quite the stir and now everyone wants a sequel.

Farmers Market 2016
Farmers Market 2016

After a massive success last year, Karen Anand brought Farmer’s Market back to Calcutta only for all the stalls to get sold out hours before closing time. Originally started in Pune, Farmer’s market is held annually in various parts of the country to celebrate food, organic living, healthy beverages and exotic food produce that are not easily accessible. It got too hot to stand for long but the live food counters selling such beautiful products, ingredients and sample food for tasting kept the spirits high and the energy did not die down before 7 pm.

A masterstroke tis season ‘Mythh’ at Hotel Hindustan International with the Mexican Food Fiesta. But did the food compliment the concept? Was Mexican cuisine brought to justice? HHI has always celebrated variety of cuisines and special festivals where food is essential. Mexican cuisine in particular was missing from the scene till a few years back when a number of Mexican takeaways and fine dining started. But the ratio is still less and HHI jumped in to meet the demand for the festive month and left us slurping for more.  – Anushree Kanoi

10 ways to sound more classy
10 ways to sound more classy

Stop saying ‘Dear or Madam’ - Dear is not even endearing, it’s just acceptable to address someone in an email. It sounds worse coming from the younger generation than older aunties because when aunties say dear it’s not as bad. But the worst is when a young man sends a message ‘Hi dear, kya haal chaal?’. Never spoke to him again. What disgusts me the most is when, people who are not working under me call me madam. And that also when their pronunciation emphasises the ‘d’ and elongates the last ‘m’. “Aur madam (madddhummm), you tho don’t have time only…looking like a model shodel n all these days.” Yuck.
